The One (Freestyle)

[Lupe Fiasco]
Ohh! Shout out to Slaughterhouse..
Joe Budden, Royce, Crooked, Joell..
Uh! yeah!

[Verse #1: Lupe Fiasco]
The game was looking weak, the whole scene starved
So I came through with some muscle milk and protein bars
Barbells and jump ropes, Bowflexes to body it
And a couple Billy Blanks Tae-Bo Karate kicks
If you aint Million Dollar Dreamin', then we op-pee-sites
In high school, I was voted the most Ted DiBiase'st
Also the most slept on, cause my Ted DiBiaseness
An Inglorious Bastard, and you looking like a Nazi biiiitch

They say it's hard out here for ol' boy, then tell me where Taraji is
I am going so raw, watch me Soy Sauce, Wasabi this
Noble on them Pro-Tools, hot as H-E- double hockey sticks
Make sure you give the chef your compliments
And thank him for his constantly great tasting accomplishments
A smiley face, emoticons if you wanna remain anonymous
My retirement's on hold, I got the whole world on conference
Matchstick Man,
I really have the confidence that I'ma give them G.O.O.D Music
like Common Sense and Consequence

Content that's relative across the continent
New York, Houston, Chi-Town, Los Angeles
Enemy!!

  3. "If you aint Million Dollar Dreamin'*, then we op-pee-sites
In high school, I was voted the Most Ted Debiase'st
Also the most slept* on, 'cuz my Ted Debiaseness"

The correct spelling is Ted DiBiase - DiBiase'st - DiBiaseness. He was a wrestler, who went by the name 'The Million Dollar Man'. His finishing move was called the 'Million Dollar Dream'* and he put people to SLEEP* with it.

  5. My Breakdown:

"Ohh! Shout out to Slaughterhouse.. Joe Budden, Royce, Crooked, Joell.. uh! yeah!

The game is lookin' weak, the whole scene starved/
So I came through with some muscle milk and protein bars/
Barbells and jump ropes, Bowflexes to body it/
And a couple Billy Blanks Tae-Bo Karate kits/"

Pretty much self explanatory just ill world play. Bowflexes are those ab-building exercise machines sold on TV informercials, and Billy Blanks created the Tae Bo karate workout back in the 80's.

"If you aint Million Dollar Dreamin', then we opposites/
In high school, I was voted the Most Ted DiBiase'st/
Also the most slept on, 'cuz my Ted DiBiaseness/
An Inglorious Bastard, and you lookin' like a Nazi bitchh/"

When I first heard this I was like DAMN lol. Ted DiBiase is a famous wrestler from back in the day who's nickname was The Million Dollar Man. His finishing move was called the Million Dollar Dream because he'd put his opponents to sleep in the ring. Inglorious Basterds is that new movie about WWII. In the movie there's this group of soldiers called the The Basterds that go around ambushing and killing as many Nazi's as they can find lol. Lupe is saying he's about to destroy you!

"They say it's hard out here for ol' boy, then tell me where Taraji is/
I am going so raw, watch me Soy Sauce, Wasabi this/
Noble on them Protools, hot as H-E- double hockey sticks/"

The first line has double meanings - Taraji Henson is a actress / singer that starred in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (also another movie reference) where her son was a man who was born 85 years old and grew younger over time (old boy). She also did the vocals on the 36M song "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp", so clever use of words. When food is raw or plain you put soy sauce or wasabi sauce to make it better (or hot). Protools is a major music production software. H-E-double hockey sticks is an old saying kids used to say back when hell was a bad word (still is but times have changed lol). Was also the name of a movie.

"Make sure you give the chef your compliments/
And thank him for his constantly great tasting accomplishments/
And smiley face emoticons if you wanna remain anonymous/
My retirements on hold, like I got the whole world on conference/"

More wordplay, just showing off his lyrical skills. Smiley face emoticons if you want to remain anonymous is just telling him via internet (obvious). The last line is probably referencing something but I don't know what?

"Matchstick Man, I really have the confidence that I'ma give them Good Music like Common Sense and Consequence/
Content that's relative across the continent/
New York, Houston, Chi-Town, Los Angeles/
    Enemy!"

A Matchstick Man is a scam artist (also was a movie called Matchstick Men, another movie reference), and a "confidence trick" is an attempt to swindle a person by gaining their confidence. Common and Consequence are both on Kanye's label GOOD Music, and the rest is just wordplay. ill track.

  6. the "I am going so raw, watch me Soy Sauce, Wasabi this" is referencing to sushi, sushi is raw fish that you put wasabi and soy sauce on.
also refrencing to lupes fanatacism to japan culture

  7. Noble on them Pro-Tools? Meaning?

  8. Nobu on them protools...nobu is a famous sushi restaurant tying in the wasabi and soy sauce

  9. And he had originally said his next album would be 3 discs to fulfill his contractual obligations and after that he would be retiring. Back when the album was going to be called L.U.P.End. He's since changed his tune, hence his retirement being on hold.

  10. Yeah I understood those two parts but he has a reference to nearly every line in the track so I would think he's talking about something in this one. What is related to "retirement being on hold" and "having the whole world on conference"? I'll take a guess from the rest of the song and say it's from a movie, but I really don't have a clue.

  11. Don't forget the smooth unspoken transition that ties Inglorious Basterds to Tarji P. Henson which is BRAD PITT! You have to realize how amazing that is. He took an actor and an actress...Brad and Taraji...Two seperate movies of there's...Basterds and Hustle and Flow...Then the one movie that links them...Benjamin Button...AND MADE LYRICAL BARS out of them...THAT FREAKING RHYME! ON BEAT! I am convinced that if you listen to too much Lupe Fiasco your head will explode like Scanners! As we say in New England - He is WICKED nice!!!! LMFAO!

  12. Wow i get thought someone else would get the"retirement being on hold" and "having the whole world on conference"..... it refers to the phone system you have to put people on hold for conference calls then you "un"hold them so everyone is connected. Lupe is on a level i don't think has been achieved before. This is art on the highest level. Like Shakespearean shit. The thing i like is that you, the listener, have to also be somewhat on that level to get all the meaning and how sick he is. If not then it sounds good but it doesnt mean anything. Usually with other artists if you break down they bars they will fall apart his just get stronger like not a misplaced word, idea, bar, concept. Its all tight and tied together not to mention that is flow is impeccable.

  13. Does anyone know why he says "op-pee-sites" instead of just opposites?

    ReplyDelete
  14. might have somethig to do with womtn having to sit down to pee....or maybe i'm reaching, like some people tend to do when analyzing lu's lyrics..who knows

    ReplyDelete
  15. @Anon It's just part of his flow..the lyrics could just as easily be written as 'opposites'. Sean just put emphasis on the way he pronounced it, but there really isn't any meaning behind it lol.

  16. i neva noticed it til now, cuz im listenin to eots rewindin every chance i get, plus im high as hell, but i think lu dissed budden on "the one"

"make sure u give THE CHEF ya compliments, n thank him for his constantly great tastin accomplishments, a smiley face in emoticons if u wanna remain anonymous" i think he sayin rae is a legend, n joe has to thank him for wat hes done, n joe is known to have a big internet followin, hence the "smiley face in emoticons" thing. am i reachin??? i think it makes sense

  17. "They say it's hard out here for ol' boy, then tell me where Taraji is
I am going so raw, watch me Soy Sauce, Wasabi this"

Oldboy is a famous South Korean movie based on a Japanese manga ( its very good). Could be another movie ref that ties in with sushi.

  18. Anonymous... thats a great point, i didn't notice that but I really do think he was telling Joe to pay homage... Raekwon the Chef deserves respect. Lupe is amazing... I never looked this hard into any rappers lyrics before, wow...

  21. In reference to his "I am going so raw, watch me Soy Sauce, Wasabi this"

Starting off with a sushi metaphor and then goes into "Make sure you give the chef your compliments
And thank him for his constantly great tasting accomplishments"

In many Japanese restaurants, the sushi is served as the chef wants you to eat it, if you're seen adding anything extra to it; it can be seen as a slap in the face to the restaurant.
Also, not complimenting the chef at a Japanese sushi bar is a HUGE cultural slap as well.
